Hi everyone! Just to add to this thread, we have also been finding Brown Dotted House Moths more regularly in the last year. We found dead Brown Dotted House Moths along with Webbing Clothes Moths around a calfskin chair that was on exhibition. We removed and inspected the chair and found pest damage, but no specimens were found on it, so we're not sure if it was just the Webbing or both. We have clothes moth pheromone traps in the area, so potentially the Brown Dotted Moths were attracted to those, as Ethan mentioned previously.

There are Webbing Clothes Moths being caught in the area too. We haven’t discovered if they are feeding on collection items yet, so unfortunately can’t add to the conversation about what risks they pose to collections. I’m very interested to hear that they are popping up at other institutions, I wonder who else is seeing more of them? If they feed on stored food products, I wonder if they would be attracted to starchy materials in collection items? We have seen a handful of reports of them at stored food warehouses, particularly with pet food, and have learned that brown dotted clothes moths are attracted to one of the components in clothes moth pheromone lures. I have sent some samples to Mark Metz at USDA to confirm their ID (N. sabroskyi and N. orleansella look very similar). According to him and his attached paper, there seems to be new evidence that brown dotted clothes moths are more of a host to stored food products where a newly identified moth, N sabroskyi is more of a host to bird nests. Personally I have not been able to confirm this, but it would be interesting to see if anyone else has identified items that brown dotted clothes moths feed on. The first time I found one was back in August of last year, and most recently as 3 in the past month in very different areas of the museum. Is there anything that we should be particularly aware of as we continue to find them? Are others also finding them more and more in their museums? We also currently have some webbing clothes moths (not at an infestation level however) and have been trying to tackle that problem with varying degrees of success.
