Hi Katy,

It is a cute little guy. But that does not tell you anything.

It is Fall, and the weather has turned cold. Chances are that this little guy
wandered in, that is, if you are not used to seeing mouse evidence around. You
might want to increase your trapping efforts, to see if there are any more.
Also, check to see if there are any new holes into the building, any recent
construction. Particularly near where you found the mouse. Clear up any food
that might be in the prep lab. Focus on housekeeping. Before you panic (or go
to extremes in your response), verify that you do have a problem. Try to
isolate it, if possible.

Good luck!
Gretchen

Hello,

I'm hoping someone knows something about mice and how to deal with them. This
fellow was found in one of our mouse traps in our fossil prep lab. I am trying
to assess whether he represents an active threat or an inadvertent visitor.
Maybe it doesn't matter? But we are wondering if he just came in from outside
(possibly even hitching a ride back from the field with our paleontologists) or
whether he came from inside the museum. I think he looks more like a "house
mouse" than a "field mouse" but does that help answer our question? And, again,
does it matter? Or should we just plaster the museum with snap traps?

Thank you in advance,
Katy
