I'd say this is one of the moth-flies (Psychodidae). The pattern on the wings indicate it is Psychoda surcoufi or a closely related species. The flies breed in bacterial or fungal slime that accumulates in drains. The adults are attracted to light, so if there is a light in the case, they will try to find a way in. They won't do any damage to the case contents. These small, flying insects are inside a case that contains items made of feather and fur. They said they were not able to get a better photo, because the insects move too quickly. I was expecting to see carpet beetles, but that's not what I can make out in this photo. The friend said the insects are under 2mm. This is in coastal California. Any assistance is welcome.
