Hi Riika, There was a poster detailing many booklice species at the 2011 Pest Odyssey conference and the proceedings are available from Archetype Publications. There was an e-book version, but I'm not sure if that is still available.
Whilst it was very detailed, it didn't note which species were pests. Generally (and someone will correct me if I'm wrong) booklice with wings are not pests - but this may only apply in northern Europe. David Pinniger's books (also available from Archetype) do give the pest species but again, I don't know if the information is only applicable to northern Europe. Hi Karina and Jane, I’ll join the conversation – To Jane or anyone: Could you recommend some references to study booklice more or share all you know about them? Although, my biggest question is that if there are many species, how to recognize the ones harmful to book- and paper material? Or are they all that? And if you or someone else happen to know their life cycle (how long it is, and all the stages). There are many species but only a few are pests. I'm not an expert on booklice, but it's quite possible that some of the other species thrive at lower humidities. People that have more knowledge than me will be able to give more information. Hello, My institution, located in Tempe, Arizona, houses archaeological artifacts, ancestors (i.e. human remains), ethnographic collections, and archives. We are having an increasing number of book lice in our collections of artifacts, ancestors, and ethnographic items. There are some in the archives, but not as prevalent as the artifact collections. This is strange because the number of book lice seems to be inversely correlated to relative humidity. Our RH fluctuates some but during the uptick in book lice (mostly October-May for the last two years), our RH has been mostly within or below the 30-40% range. Any ideas why that would be? And more importantly, what treatments can be safely administered? Freezing all of our collections is just simply not possible. Thank you!!
