Hello,

No – that’s not a springtail.
I think it’s a thrips (Thysanoptera).

They can fly and are found as what is known as ‘airborne plankton’.
They also have a habit of crawling into narrow crevices (e.g. under
picture frames, monitors and computer screens).

They aren’t actually pests of collections.
Most of them suck fluid from the leaves of plants. However, some also
feed on fungi that grow on dead wood. Some (larger) species are also
predators and hunt other insects.

All the best
Joachim

Dear all,

Our conservator found this tiny (less than a mm) bug moving around on a
Japanese scroll that was receiving some conservation work. Our
conservator described it as being jumpy and pretty quick moving. I am
thinking it is a Springtail based on the jumping, size and more pointed
tail, but not positive as I do not believe they are known to inhabit
paper. I also was thinking it was maybe a booklouse but the tail looks
too pointed to be one, again not positive though. Any thoughts on what
it could be and potential next steps to take would be greatly
appreciated!

All the best,
Everette Adams
