Hi Leonie

Are the objects relatively new (i.e. recently carved)? We have seen significant damage occur in carvings caused by freezing where the timber was still 'green'. If the timber is still drying then it is likely that you will see cracks appearing over coming weeks/months, but freezing can cause much greater damage.

Do you have the option of using low oxygen? It would be a much safer approach.

Best wishes
Alex

My museum recently acquired many painted wooden objects from Papua New Guinea.
They are heavily infested with different woodboring insects, which we would
like to eradicate by freezing at -30°C.
However the objects arrived in a damp state (wood humidity 16-18%), and cannot
be dried prior to the treatment.
Will there be substantial damage due to the formation of ice inside the wood?
Smaller objects have been frozen to -20°C without apparent damage, but I am
still uncertain.
I'd be very greatful for any help and advice!
