They feed on microscopic mold which indicates that the relative humidity is too high. From personal experience I experienced a huge increase in population just prior to a mold out break. At the very least they are an environmental indicator.
The good news is that they can be easily controlled through improved housekeeping and reduced RH. Good luck. As far as I can tell we have a number of different types, such as Dorypteryx-domestica, Liposcelis-bostrychophila, Ectopsocus Briggsi and Psyllipsocus Ramburii. What I would like your thoughts on is – are all/any classed as a danger to archive material (books, textiles, photographs)? I use a number of different sources (online and books where possible), but if anyone knows of specific books that are handy for identification this would also be great!
