so you reformatted to NTFS and then went on to install Ubuntu onto the NTFS and it stalled ? Or the reformat balked ?

Your OP said "it gets so far through the formatting" so I'm confused.

If it is formatted you could chkdsk /f it from Windows to see if it is happy.

Why not wipe the partition with Gparted and repartition it then format Ext3 or similar ?
