Yes it is exactly as you describe

there are different versions of firmware - can you see which it is ?

There are two potential issues with these routers, auto-configuration and ISP validation.

The latter is like locking a GSM phone where it scans the username you put in for the broadband and rejects it if not from the ISP providing the kit. This can usually be worked around with a bit of URL hacking, but it isn't present in all routers.

The auto-config problem is that once the thing sees the internet it will update itself and restart with a BT specific image. The solution to this is to "poison" the DNS by putting a rogue entry in for the BT provisioning server,

can you access 192.168.1.254/mdc or possibly /management (IP address may be different) ?
http://shastademo.2wire.com/rgw3-7/CONTENT/management/index.html
shows the GUI, under "Provisioning info" you'll see entries like ActivationPage http://gateway.cms.2wire.com/links/shasta_registration

you "poison" this URL under "DNS resolve" with an entry along the lines
cwmp.cms.smehomehubrms.bt.com 10.0.0.0

which maps the BT config server discovered as above to a useless address.

There's a forum at http://www.dslreports.com/forum/2wire which may answer other questions but I'm happy to try too.

The hack using Opera for the username validation is at
