Hi Phil,

Thank you for your kind offer of support. I aim to purchase the pilot hardware
this week and to start testing next week. I have proposed to Mark that a
possible venue for one of the PLUG meetings could be at our school so that
members gain a clearer picture of our project.
I am very keen to involve as many people as possible as one of the reasons I
have used whilst 'selling' this project to the headteacher was the community
support with Linux. I realise that at some point we will need commercial
support for the 'mission critical' points of the installation but if all those
involved could learn something from the project it would seem a fitting outcome
for an educational project.

I have outlined my pilot plan for one classroom below but all members are
welcome to advise alternatives. The only reason I have chosen the following
course of action is the need to get a pilot in place to guage opinion on a
non-Microsoft experience. Although our term has only just started I would like
to have a fully operational project up and running by September.

As PLUG members have agreed to be involved with our project I thought that
setting up this pilot would give a starting point that we could amend / fine
tune /replace.

Install Edubuntu server on what will become a slave server.
Configure clients to boot from PXE.
Configure internet access.
Let me know your thoughts!

Andy

Hi Mark, at present we don't have any hardware but my advise to date has been
for the classroom servers -

Athlon 64X2 4400 2.3Ghz 2GB RAM 80Gb HDD

I was then hoping to use recycled Celeron 1.7Ghz 256/20gb as clients (as I can
source these for £30 each)

I aim to purchase these at the end of this week to set up the pilot classroom,
any other alternative suggestions would be welcomed!

As you have suggested this project as a topic for a PLUG meeting maybe we could
host one at the school so that members could get a clearer idea of what we are
trying to do. I could do some prep on machines as suggested by members and then
repay some of the generosity with tea, coffee and doughnuts! I don't mind the
idea of 'too many cooks' as at present I don't even feel that I can make beans
on toast when it comes to the complexities of Linux!!

would breaking it down into pieces help - thin clients, the classroom
server supporting them, the central server providing common file storage
and user authentication, a web cache / content filtering (if required) /
firewall appliance etc ?

would be good for Plug and Linux to be seen helping a local school.

Phil
