Oh yes I see what you mean, You can still use beryl, its pretty strtaightforward to install using
sudo apt-get ... If you also have a cedega subscription you could install it and a few cool 3D windows games, just to show them that linux isnt just for men with beards and sandals... You can also show them how to access extra "free software" with synaptic, automatix etc...
