Hi, Marcelo! I don't know the answer as I didn't test.. But, as an idea, you can try to download postgresql-8.4's sources, compile it on etch, then compile pgpool linked to 8.4 libs..
Anyway, I think you will have to download/compile/install pgpool on your lenny in order to install the 'online recovery' function..
