I've asked them to put up PostgreSQL as an alternative, but they just say
"too hard" and don't want to talk about it.

I think we may translate 'too hard' into 'I'm too lazy to learn something different and provide better
service to my customers'. Or, in the interests of simplicity, 'I'm too dumb'.
