At the moment, I see no consensus here, in fact, it seems there are more opinions than options. ;-) I think this is an important topic to resolve one way or another, and there also appear to be at least some documentation gaps if not bugs in the existing code. I created a commitfest entry for this for PG20-1, so we can continue tracking this.
