For whatever it's worth, I consider my capability limited to making sure the patch applies and coming up with a few interesting ways of testing it out, but not seriously studying the code and knowing when there might be a competitive alternative implementation. I don't yet understand the issues that have been raised, but will quit working to review the patch if you feel it's not ready.
