Actually you don't. I personally do because the 41xx driver has some serious problems with gnome2/nautilus. It somehow slows down to a crawl in that combination. I've been in contact with their engineers about this just after its release and its a 'known problem' which they hope to have fixed in the next update.. so since i use gnome2 for my desktop, my choices are limited to either the nv driver or nvidia-3123 drivers.

whoops, i just noticed the version number: 3123.  did you really
need to regress to an older version of the nvidia drivers?  bummer.
