I tried moving back to perl-5.8.0-55.i386.rpm which I got from the RH8 disks and the problems with the Makefiles went away. 'make test' didn't pass with flying colours though, and when I tried running a fairly big Tk application it crashed. When I tried to build perl/Tk with an RH8 installation the compilation failed, did you see that?
