Thank you very much for your help.  I made those links
but it didn't seem to work.  I then made another link
libGL.so in the quake3 directory itself to
/usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.1.2 and that got it going. 
What is now weird is that the inro "movie" when quake3
first starts is really choppy and unwatchable. 
However, when I get into the game itself, it's nice
and smooth and I'm geting 90 fps in that first level.

I wonder why the intro is different?

Thanks again for all the help!  The opensource 3d
acceleration for this radeon 9000 pro makes me want to
ditch my nvidia and grab one!
