But it's not called 9.0, it's "Red Hat Linux 9" with no ".0".

That's impossible as Red Hat has never released a Linux product 
with version "8.1"

Perhaps you mean that you have had trouble with one of the Phoebe 
codenamed beta releases which were version numbered 8.0.9x, 
destined to become Red Hat Linux 9 all along?
