Hello Jim, I start it having the arm in a "straight position", in relation to the start of the record itself. Then I lower it. What brand is the reproducer marked? Does it say Edison under it's mica? I have never seen an Edison brand reproducer made for playing "regular" 78's, on the DD machines.
