I used to have a very nice Edison C2 & C4. I had the electronics on both professionally rebuild and the sounded great even with acoustically recorded records, although the later electrics were clearly better and louder. It's been more than 10 years since I sold them so I can't remember which sounded better. What I do remember though is that there was still an upper limit to the volume which was somewhat greater, but not alot greater than one would get from a well tuned acoustic diamond disc reproducer.
I still love to play the records on original equipment but my best records I only play on a modern "Esoteric Sound" turntable set up with a special switch so you can also play diamond discs. I've got a couple of different styli which I can switch in and out of a "Stanton's" cartridge all from "Expert Pickups" in the UK. This is all powered by a Fischer 500C tube amp. from the 1960's which I purchased rebuilt a few years ago. To this I added a 10 band graphic equalizer from the late 70's. The equalizer filters out all the noise at the high and low ends of the spectrum. This setup reproduces vintage 78s and diamond discs with great clarity and unbelievable volume. I also have some recordings of 78s & Edisons on CD. The sound quality is comparable. Will I quit playing records on original equipment? It's unlikely. But a similar setup is something some of you out there might want to consider. Cheers, Bruce [email protected] -
