Thanks to everyone for the many suggestions. Some I would have never dreamed of. Let's see if I have this right; apply cold cream to my face, have a beer, clean the windows with windex while the cylinders are soaking in ammonia followed by cleaning the beer glass with beer glass cleaner. Got it, but how long do I leave the cold cream on? ;-))) Honestly, I do appreciate the tips and had not even thought of the temperature dif. on those brittle 4 min. Some of those are favorites I haven't played in years and in cleaning them all I try to "do no harm". Steve, you are right about the DDs. I've yet to see one that is truly clean no matter how shiny and good it may look. I routinely clean every one of mine when I first get them with denatured alcohol...first go round with a white soft cloth with a nub to get in the grooves. I follow this with cotton balls until continued wiping shows nothing coming off. It's amazing how much dirt comes off and how much better the records sound. Originally DD were waxed from the factory on the edge and also the surface. Not knowing what type of wax they used on the surface I leave it alone but do coat the edges with a hard wax to make sure the core is sealed. Anyone happen to know the original surface wax formula or type of wax used on DDs?

Best,
Bruce Mercer

For wax cylinders I use a shoe brush and brush in the directions of the grooves.

For blue amberols I use a soft cloth and distilled water. Examine them in sunlight to see how clean they are, DD records that look clean and shiny can really surprise you in the sunlight.

Wax amberols that have been properly stored hold up well. I have some 2 and 4 minute records made of the wax amberol wax that are actually in good condition.

I'm sure most on this group know a safe and effective way to clean a 4 min. BA or any celluloid cylinder. Obviously do not get the interior wet but can water on a cloth with a little dish washing detergent followed by a thorough 'rinse' and a careful cloth 'drying' be the way to go about it? Being a DD collector I don't think celluloid would do to well using the same thing I clean DD with. :-) What about the earlier 4 min. black Amberols that are so fragile? Can I use the same process and materials used for celluloid? I'm finally setting up my cylinder machine after Steve rebuilt the reproducer for me. It's been stored away far too many years.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
