That's why I had suggested a stronger spring could be put in the barrel, probably at minimal cost. (I had a special spring put in my 30s Thorens portable and it came to around $60 plus shipping. Plays 12" discs like gangbusters now.) And as for discussing crap-o-phones, the one external-horn disc machine I have is a Victor Jr., and even with a restored soundbox and a Monarch spring in the barrel it sounds thin and modest - such is its nature - so if you want an external horn machine that can, with some modification, sound fairly good and look attractive at a minimal cost, why not buy a "crap-o-phone"? The only point of a Victor Jr. is _having_ one, not listening to it - so what if it's "original"? ________________________________________ From: phono-l-boun...@oldcrank.org [phono-l-boun...@oldcrank.org] on behalf of Steven Medved [steve_nor...@msn.com] Sent: Tuesday, September 18, 2012 2:03 PM To: phono-l@oldcrank.org Subject: Re: [Phono-L] Have YOU ever purchased a Crap-O-Phone???
Unfortunately some have motors so weak a normal sound box will not work. > From: philip_ca...@pittsford.monroe.edu > To: phono-l@oldcrank.org > Date: Tue, 18 Sep 2012 15:58:15 +0000 > Subject: Re: [Phono-L] Have YOU ever purchased a Crap-O-Phone??? > > I would expect that if you put a good soundbox on it, an HMV or Victor > Exhibition, Victrola no. 2 or 4, or any decent generic mica-diaphragmmed > piece, the machine would actually sound pretty fair - better than most > portables, for instance, as at least you've got an external horn.
