I experience this exact problem too. I am on the verge of given up compiling PHP completely. My configure line is: $./configure --with-apxs2=/usr/local/apache2/bin/apxs I am attempting to compile PHP 4.3.3 on Redhat Linux 9. Before "make install" falls over it creates two files in my /usr/local/apache2/modules directory: libphp4.la libphp4.a However no trace of libphp4.so anywhere on my system.
