I've changed basic-syntax.xml a little. The manual list short tag first, even if it recommends <?php tag.
Anyway, I would like to add something like <note> <para> Use of short tag is strongly discouraged. It not only non-portable and non-XML compliant, but also a obsolete feature. </para> </note> There are too many hosting services that enable short tag by default.
