My mail client removed the backslashes from my mail.

The output had a backslash before each single quote.

On my PHP 4.3.2 installation, echo addslashes("the 'capitol-' of
Kefalonia"); displays:
the 'capitol-' of Kefalonia
which appears to be correct.
