Have you tried 'compressing' something using PHP and then 'uncompressing' it 
using the VB-zlib wrapper?

gzuncompress() <-> gzcompress()
gzinflate()    <-> gzdeflate()

There seems to be an error in the manual listing:

  "gzuncompress -- Uncompress a deflated string"
