[php-list] php page displays only code in browser

hi I am a beginner so forgive if this is a stupid question.  I was 
setting up a php page.  the sample worked until I opened the php file 
in notepad.  now all php files opened in my browsers display only the 
code.  can anyone tell me how to correct this.
