Adding role="xxx" to <refentry> where xxx is one of a predefined set of values (class, interface, function, method, etc.), would seem to be one way of going. During rendering, any <refentry> without a role could be reported, any using the Format::getDebugTree() method, we'd be able to report exactly where in the document tree the error is (and possibly suggest the role based upon its location ... maybe). I could put together a script that would sync en's refentry roles to the translations, so this would/should be a one-off exercise.
