I thought I had seen some talk of that recently, but wasn't sure.

Simple case suffices:

   mjhammel(tty3)$ pilot-xfer -f blahblah
      Port: /dev/ttyS0
   
      Please press the HotSync button now...
   Connected...
   Unable to locate database 'blahblah', fetch skipped.
   mjhammel(tty3)$ echo $?
   0
