Eric Renner's Pinhole Photography: Rediscovering a Historic Technique, in its second edition from Focal Press, has an awful lot of history in it, and it would make a good starting place. I believe it's available at any of the online bookstores, eg, amazon.com, or directly from Eric and Nancy at www.pinholeresource.com, and I found mine at Staceys, a fine bricks and mortar bookstore here in San Francisco. --Eric
