Some people try to make the paper more translucent (before they contact print it) by using wax (for instance), I don't. FAST PAPER is an oxymoron. It has been agreed -sort of- in this list that ISO-6 is a good starting point for modern B&W paper emulsion. As for positive papers, I believe some people do use them, some people do cibachrome pinhole photography, thing I have no experience with but pretty sure some others in this list can tell you more about.
