I'm not a pitivi developer, just an interested user, but I am running on vanilla Ubuntu 11.04, and installing from the PPA worked very well.. I was able to edit a video with effects and render it.
It did segfault once or twice tho, so I would suggest ensuring that you save regularly! Your mail doesn't state what kind of error you are getting, or what platform you are running on... I'm sure that you will need to give more details before anyone will be able to advise you on what might be the cause of your issue. James.
