Dan points out that I'm wrong:

    2960 pkg(1) could use an extensions mechanism like Mercurial

I was thinking more of the idea that a package could deliver its own
actions, which was an idea we rejected some time ago.  I'd certainly rather
try to make as much of the needed functionality generic and in the main
codebase, but if there really is functionality that doesn't belong there,
but distros need it, it would be better to allow for a plugin mechanism
than to force distro maintainers to patch the code.
