It's about 700MB on my system, and 1.4GB on a colleague's system (where redistributable is installed, as well as a long history). License files are stored here as well, and they can get rather large, given how some of our packages are structured. I believe we have bugs open for managing this directory better than we currently are. We don't have any tools available for this, but if you want to remove subdirectories from this directory, you can -- just be sure that you don't remove anything corresponding to an installed package, as that may severely damage your system. For safety, take a snapshot before doing anything like that.
