I looked through some of the mail logs and man page for pkg(1). I can't

been using 'pkg image-update' to update it as builds were published. I
now have a system with a 32GB root filesystem that contains ~22GB of
cruft in /var/pkg. Since I don't plan on going back to the old boot
environments, I have already destroyed most of them. Is there some
supported method of purging the cached cruft in /var/pkg?

Providing automated ways of handling this is on our list of things to do. In the mean time, you can remove as much of /var/pkg/download/*
as you have patience for ... this can take a while.
