Indeed. I just tried it using the test case which prompted my question,
namely a search across all publishers for 'gnome' (for which there are
784 packages in my case).
Before your webrev:
real 5:05.961714968
user 3:41.359686188
sys 6.376830880
In addition, PM went non-responsive (compiz dims the window) on
two occasions with each occasion lasting more than a minute.
After your webrev:
real 57.416447388
user 22.655867655
sys 1.755025792
PM did not become non-responsive at all.
