Bug:
7139873 parent image should remain locked during image update
The basic idea behind this fix is that if we want to keep two images
locked, we need two image objects and if we're going to have two image
objects, then let's not change the root out from underneath the existing
object.
I'm not thrilled with this solution, but I haven't thought of a better
way of doing the change that isn't either a bigger hack or involves much
more overhaul of the code.
