Hi Ed
Thanks for looking at this, I noticed the variant.opensolaris.zone=global
in the ldoms manager which appeared wrong, so Al told me about the fix 7161790 which fixed the loophole for said variant getting installed in NGZ's which wnet in sru10 build 2 which I am now on, so thanks for explaining how this then tied in to make my update fail.

I guess for now I'll test update from SRU9.5 to SRU 10.5, I expect it will work, as 9.5 does not have said fix 7161790, but then updates from sru 10.5 to sru 11.5 will subsequently fail, so if the fix goes into SRU11 to make large-server not depend on ldomsmanager then we should be ok I guess, assuming that IPS ignores the installed ldomsmanager or perhaps removes it even.

Enda

hey enda,

i've gone ahead and filed a bug on this issue (and added you to the cc):

7192769 solaris-large-server dependency on ldomsmanager breaks zone updates in
s11sru10

Eventually I got an error message via

So if there is no CR to cover this lack of error message is it
feasible to have pkg fixed so that pkg udpate alone can tell me the
error without having to resort to this.

hey enda,

there are assorted CRs to improve error reporting under certain conditions, but
i'm not sure there's anything we can do right now directly for this particular
situation.

that said, the failure you've pointed out seems like a potentially serious bug.

specifically, in s11u1_22 the ldomsmanager dependency in solaris-large-server
has a global zone variant tag:

---8<---
edp@mcescher$ pkg contents -rm solaris-large-server | grep ldomsmanager
depend fmri=system/ldoms/ldomsmanager type=group variant.arch=sparc
variant.opensolaris.zone=global
---8<---

but the latest solaris-large-server package from s11sru02 doesn't:

---8<---
edp@mcescher$ pkg list -g http://ipkg.us.oracle.com/solaris11/support -favH
solaris-large-server
pkg://solaris/group/system/[email protected],5.11-0.175.0.0.0.2.2576:20111020T063610Z
 ---
edp@mcescher$ pkg contents -g http://ipkg.us.oracle.com/solaris11/support -m
solaris-large-server | grep ldomsmanager
depend fmri=system/ldoms/ldomsmanager type=group variant.arch=sparc
---8<---

previous version of pkg.1 ignored these kind of package metadata errors, but
that was a bug (7161790) which has been fixed, and that fix was backported to
s11sru10.

assuming that the ldomsmanager dependency in solaris-large-server hasn't been
fixed in s11sru10_05, then this would cause the failure you're seeing. if this
is the case then a bug that needs to get filed since this would be a stopper
issue for releasing s11sru10_05.
