Ok, the summary of the problem was that this was a sparc system, and due
to a bug (since fixed in S11.1, and back-ported to S11 SRU10, I believe)
some i386-only packages had managed to get installed on the system,
which was causing the solver some grief when we were trying to remove
packages.
After identifying which packages were responsible (by looking for
packages containing "set name=variant.arch value=i386" that also didn't
have a "value=sparc" attribute) we removed those and were then able to
uninstall the packages Dave wanted removed.
Many thanks to Bart, Brock, Ed and Shawn for helping to root-cause this.
