Ok, I've been able to reproduce this. I have both nnimap groups and nnml
groups, and it seems to be a problem with the nnml groups but not with the
nnimap groups. I'll file a bug for this and try to work on it.

If either of you can come up with any more information about when it does _not_
happen (like when no extra articles are inappropriately marked read), that
would be a big help.
