I wonder if you have an entry in the customize section of your .emacs that
might "destroy" the setting? This comes at the end of the .emacs file and
can change any settings that appear in the upper portion of the file.
The section I'm referring to begins with "(custom-set-variables..."

As a matter of fact, when I check this variable on the working or
non-working installations, I get absolutely nothing. Or, more
correctly, I get a [No Match] message.
