And now for something really interesting. I've used Cygwin's Emacs  
this time. I've shunned this app so far due to some oddities, but it's

As you can see, GNU Emacs is even faster on Cygwin than on my FreeBSD  
box, the older hardware notwithstanding. I conclude that my speed  
problems are neither planner's nor muse's fault, but are caused by  
speed issues of the native Windows port of GNU Emacs.
