A small suggestion about item 2: thinking about keep only visual elements the user needs at the moment (and place others in just when they become needed), what if the icon is hidden while there's no media to list and shows up (and pops the dialog) when the first device gets in (the same event that would change the icon from idle), staying there 'till the list is empty?
It's mainly (or maybe only) when user needs it, once he inserted nothing or removed everything, so he normally won't look for anything there (unless the presence of the icon - or its absense - when the opposite was expected will lead him to check it). It would work and have the exact same notifying effect of the idle icon but it would be one less thing all the time on user's screen when not needed. What do you think?
