Sounds like a clean and elegant solution.  A side benefit:  a lot of
minor OS's (QNX and OS/2 come to mind) have VBE video drivers.  It's a
cheap way for them to get the maximum number of compatible video
chipsets.  Why not take advantage of it?

Of course, it just postpones the inevitable, but why not?  :)
