I've tried on another Ubuntu system. Same versions of all the software, but 64-bit. This system works fine with near instantaneous running of the examples. Printers and so forth are different between the two systems, so now I just need to work out exactly what differences are causing the problem. But anyway it doesn't look like an intrinsic problem with Qt libs.
