Filename extensions have been archaic half-butted compromises for
decades, but they're still pretty convenient.
And, at least as importantly, Windows and many Un*x tools rely on the
filename extensions. (I'm not sure about Mac OS X.) Some Web servers
and some Web browsers also rely on extensions for determining MIME types.
