hrmm... well to start at the start, I started over and tried to use Debian
packages:

plucker:
 *** 1.8-1 0
        500 http://debian.lcs.mit.edu unstable/main Packages
        500 http://http.us.debian.org unstable/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
plucker-desktop:
 *** 1.8-1 0
        500 http://debian.lcs.mit.edu unstable/main Packages
        500 http://http.us.debian.org unstable/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Unfortunately, the Debian package for plucker-desktop doesn't have the
binary. So let's forget that for the moment.

I can get 1.6 and convert it to a deb with alien:
dpkg -i plucker-desktop_1.6.0.0-2_i386.deb

The first time I instantiate it, I get the wizard, set the resolution and
such, and the output directory to:
  /home/reagle/.kde/share/apps/kpilot/pending_install
No proxy. Accept the clinical exam.

Huh. Wow, this time it worked! It actually spidered and created the pdb, go
figure. Well, hopefully it sticks!
