I'm an old guy so I have failed more than a few time. I've learned a lot and I hope I can apply that learning to my latter years.

Couple of things:

1) I was easy distracted so the project I was working on would fail or just not reach it's potential. Now I no longer allow shiny objects distract me. 2) I was not the intentional man that I needed to be. I did not always research, make a plan, and work my plan. Multiple times I let the wind decide my course. That caused me not to be as successful as I would have liked to have been. 3) I learned about the Hedgehog concept at almost 50. I wish I would have learned about it earlier.

I think the starting point for any project is the PERSONAL Hedgehog concept (there is a Hedgehog concept for business and one for a person). Be intentional and do not let distractions kill your success.

Learn how to make a business plan and take the time to figure out what is right for you and your business.

I think you need to do some research and create a business plan that

will answer this questions as well. You need to identify what
services
you will be offering, what skills you need, what equipment is
required,
how to get customers, what to charge, etc.

thanks, buddy. I already have the laptop with Windows 10 (I

think I should use for bookkeeping. is self-employed good enough?

Hi Michael,

Sounds like a good idea. I recently saw and ad that said
bookkeepers
are in demand. Keep in mind it was a advertisement.

If you want to do this I would consider Quickbooks so you can
exchange
data with your customers.

I used the search phrase "does intuit offer free training in
quickbooks"
on Google and it returned:

---
QuickBooks Online Certification trainings and exams are free to
accounting pros and available in QuickBooks Online Accountant.
Gain
skills to better service your clients while earning credentials
that
keep your practice growing.
---

There was this link directly below :

https://quickbooks.intuit.com/accountants/training-certification/

The Google query "Can QuickBooks be self taught?" returned a
bunch
of
info such as:

---
Yes, you absolutely can. You'll lose access to Live QuickBooks
Help and
Instructor-led classes, but you'll keep lifetime access to ALL
60+

self-paced classes for LIFE. That includes all class updates
- we update classes when QuickBooks changes
- and any new self-paced classes we add.
---

I would recommend you put together a business plan that includes
what it
will take to run Windows and pay for the Intuit training.
This will help in your decision making. This should include a
marking
plan - how are you going to acquire customers.

I run Win 10 because my video editing software is Windows only.

I have an old laptop that runs windows. I bought it new maybe 8
years
ago and have kept it in good condition. I assume something like
this
might work. My battery is still good so I am thinking this
laptop
might
be worth $100 - $200.

Another option is to load VirtualBox on your Linux box and
create
a
Windows guest configured for your needs.

The laptop I mentioned has 2 core/4 thread CPU which I upgraded
from 8G
of RAM to 16G of RAM. I've evaluated it a lot and it never
utilized
more than 8GB of RAM and the CPU often spikes to 100% and then
goes down
to 60 to 70%. I think this means if I had a more powerful CPU it
might
use more RAM.

Based on my experience your Windows configuration will need 8GB
of
RAM
to run windows and Quickbooks. Browsers hog RAM so keep that in
mind.

I'm excited for you Michael

I know, I know.... this is a Linux group and Quickbooks is a
windows
thing. I was hoping to learn Quickbooks [or the linux
equivalent] and
to start a Bookkeeping business. I have a few questions:
1- Does it work under Wine? Chat gpt says partially.
2- I've heard that you don't need an accounting degree. Is that
true?
Chatgpt says it isn't necessary.
3- What is the Linux equivalent? Chatgpt mentioned odoo (as
well
as
the usual suspects). I like the idea of odoo due to the fact
that you
can get semi-formal training on Udemy. (I wanted to probe
further with
chatgpt about odoo but it became unresponsive (the enter button
grayed
out)/
4- Where can I get training for Quickbooks (or the Linux
equivalent)?
5- Where can I get a copy of Quickbooks for a low price if that
is the
best path to take? Like, you can get Windows for about $15 so
why not
Quickbooks? (gpt said I couldn't)
