What you observed is the curious problem.
Yes, it does display with a transparent background,
but when I put it on the main panel, it shows up with
a white background.  That is what I don't understand.

I right-click on the panel icon -> click "Icon settings" ->
-> click on the icon to be replaced -> locate the new icon with a
transparent background to replace the old one ... click on that ->
-> click OK ... and it doesn't work.  Bummer.  Strange.
